Guidelines for Paper 2
Former President Bush has proposed that the United
States focus on replacing fosil fuels with hydrogen for transportation.
This proposal is controversial. Opponents argue
that conservation efforts are a more practical solution. There are many technical
and scientific problems to be overcome in producing, distributing and using
this type of fuel. Proponents say that such a program will lead to decreased
dependance on imported fossil fuels and also to reshaping our society. New forms
of technology will be developed and new industries will emerge just as they
did with other innovative programs. In a five to seven page paper you are to examine
the feasibility and advisability of this proposal. Should the United States
work to replace fossil fuels with hydrogen? You have a lot of freedom in choosing
which aspects of the problem to discuss. However you must include what you consider
to be the biggest scientific or engineering obstacle that such a project must
overcome. Note that some of the debate stems from opponents who have different "worldviews". Try to identify these different worldviews and show how the debate is likely to be long lasting.
Be sure to follow MLA guidelines for formatting your paper. Also be sure to attach a copy of the Grading Rubric to the front of your paper.The paper is due at the start of class on August 6.
