Quantitative Applications of Problem Solving

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to manipulate and create various spreadsheet programs and database applications that solve problems in business, mathematics, and the sciences. Students will be able to effectively use the business and scientific functions of Excel when solving problems. Students will be able to effectively create a software solution to a typical business/scientific problem using a spreadsheet and a database application. Students will be able to create charts, data tables, and relational databases, and they will link documents with other applications and present a solution to a non-trivial problem using software integrated with spreadsheets and a database. Students will be familiar with creating and using a database application to solve data-related problems. All students completing the course are required to complete ALL of the computing competencies.

Prerequisites

Math 1314 - College Algebra.

  2. Essentials Access 2000 Basic by Robert Ferrett, Sally Preson, John Preston ISBN - 1-58076-094-5 Publisher - Prentice Hall.

Required Materials: 2 3.5" floppy diskettes (IBM format ) for file saving

Attendance Policy: Attendance will be taken every class day. If you miss a class, you are still responsible for ALL class activities that day. It is your responsibilty to find out what content was covered and what assignments were made. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL EXAMS. Absolutely no makeup exams will be given. Students are responsible for withdrawing from the course. If you miss 5 or more classes and fail to withdraw from the class, a grade of F may be assigned. Attendance is 5% of your grade and it is assigned as follows:

Grades will be based on the following scale with previous constraints:
90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D

Important Deadlines for Semester including Dropping the Course:

Late homework/assignments will NOT BE ACCEPTED. Assignments not turned in on time will receive a zero.

Academic Honesty: All examinations are individual effort only. Students may get help from others on assignments but everyone is expected to turn in his or her own work. Copying another's work and turning it in as one's own is an incident of academic dishonesty and the student may receive an F for the course if this occurs.

Final Exam :    Mandatory for all students, Date as scheduled by the registrar for each class time.
