Obtaining Putty (Secure Shell Software) for Remote Connections

  1. Copy the putty.exe file or get it at this Putty download site or any other that you can find (use Google.) Be sure you pay attention to where you save the .exe file on your system. If you put it on the desktop it will make it a shortcut and you don't need to do anything. The .exe file is the executable. Its small, and easy. And free.

  2. To use Putty or any other secure shell connection software, be sure you use ssh2 if that is an option (if not use ssh).
When setting up a connection you use the host as either cn01.cs.stedwards.edu or cn02.cs.stedwards.edu. Its easy to name a session and save it so that when you connect to the CS system you can just choose the saved session name.
