This course focuses on bio-, psycho-, and social theories as related to human growth and development across the life cycle. It also incorporates issues of cultural diversity as they affect development through the life cycle. This class will encourage critical thinking of developmental theories and help students apply such theories and developmental research to counseling situations and perhaps their own lives.

  1. 1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the normal processes of sequential physical, psychological, and socio-cultural development of individuals through the life cycle by accuratelyassessing the functioning and developmental needs of persons in various stage of the life cycle.
  2. Students will be able to identify the limitations of traditional developmental models relative to the counseling process and special populations.
  3. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the effects of race/ethnicity, culture, class, gender, sexual orientation, physical disability, and mental disability on individual behavior and on life cycle development by writing accurate descriptions of those effects.
  4. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the consequences of discrimination, economic deprivation, and oppression in the development of individuals and on the welfare of at-risk populations.
  5. Students will be able to apply the principles and concepts presented in class to their own personal and professional development.
