university responsibility
- Continued as Co-chair of the Human Subjects Review Board for the 2007-2008 academic year. To ensure that proper ethical guidelines and research protocol are followed by all conducting research involving human participants at St. Edward’s University, the HSRB reviews all applications and abstracts before giving approval to begin data collection. Along with Dr. Jeannetta Williams, I receive all applications (which are many throughout the entire year – including summer terms), initially review to decide whether to go to full board, and ultimately make recommendations to the researcher. This is an extremely time-consuming, but rewarding position.
- Attended and participated in regularly held departmental meetings to discuss courses offered for our major, budgetary issues, assessing psychology students’ performance, etc.
This year, in particular, I have had the privilege of working with certain psychology faculty, architects, and engineers to bring to life the vision we all have for the new psychology lab space in renovated Doyle Hall. I have set up and hosted trips to other labs for our group to assess and compare the technology and set up, and have discussed with the team what would be most effective in our research needs here at St. Ed’s.
- Assisted in Search for new Asst. Professor of Cognitive Psychology position
Hosted candidates, attended presentations, and answered questions regarding position, etc.
- Faculty sponsor and mentor for McNair Scholars Program
Supervised research with McNair student and helped prepare final research results at National McNair conference. She has also presented our research at additional conferences and won student research award.
- Faculty sponsor and mentor for TG Summer Research Intern Program
Supervised student research over summer term and helped to prepare presentation at the TG Summer Research Intern Program Celebration Luncheon.
- Assisted Forensic Science Classes
Had my students serve as victims, witnesses, and investigators in mock crime scene.
- Served on Panel for the 2nd Annual Louis Gregory Symposium on Race Unity
Served with distinguished panel with colleagues from across the nation to discuss status of race relations; personal, community, and global implications; and realistic solutions.
- Committee member of the Service Learning/Living Learning Communities team
Attended meetings to follow-up the initial pilot year of the communities to discuss assessment and best practices.
- Member of the University Critical Review Board/Critical Issues Board
This committee only met a few times throughout the year, but dealt with critical, life-changing decisions for some of our students. Attempting to remain fair and just, while also teaching students to be responsible for their own actions was critical on this team.
- Member of Untenured Faculty Organization (UFO)
Attended meetings to discuss what we can do as junior faculty to succeed not only in the classroom, but also how to successfully maneuver the promotion and tenure process. Many wonderful ideas were shared and the Center for Teaching Excellence consistently provided excellent resources for the group.
- Co-chair of St. Edward’s Psychology Society student organization
This group on bright, motivated students has done some wonderful things. They have engaged in several community activities and fund-raising and have provided some much needed information for our psychology students in the way of career opportunity via speakers, etc. We even created new Psych Society T-Shirts!
- Participated in the St. Edward’s Faculty and Staff Campaign
- Served as peer reviewer for the Journal of Family Psychology
Read and reviewed two manuscripts submitted for publication to the journal and ultimately made recommendation for publication.
- Participated in Faculty Showcase
Presented on Best Practices: How to successfully write a Presidential Excellence Grant
- Member of the BSS Scholarship Committee
Met to call, review, and decide on applications for student and faculty research awards.
- Worked with the Go! Project
Hosted several of the Go Project students in my classes to offer them the opportunity to experience life as ‘real’ college students. These students were a joy to have in class and I believe they gain much valuable experience from participating in my classes.
- Member of the Online Learning Committee (OLC)
Met throughout the year to discuss/decide how to make new technological tools most readily available to faculty and students at St. Ed’s both on and off campus; and subsequently incorporate these tools into the classroom setting.
- Participated in Undergraduate honors night as a representative faculty member for the school of BSS – Psychology
Assisted in handing out awards to our outstanding psychology students, and in particular, was honored to present my own McNair student, Ilse Carrizales, with a research award.
- Participated in Graduation convocation and ceremonies to celebrate the achievement of our graduating seniors
- Organized and Co-Chaired Summer Research Group for Psychology students
This group met last summer and will again meet with summer. Our goal is to meet with students and faculty conducting research to share ideas and assist each other in the research process. We also discuss any issues concerning graduate school applications, career choices, etc. A small grant has been submitted for the funding of this program.
